Blood Sugar Recommendations

Controlling blood sugar is the main goal for those with diabetes.  Several organizations have set recommendations for blood sugar.  The recommendation will vary depending upon when you test. 

The American Diabetes Association recommends the following for those with diabetes:

  • before eating (pre-prandial plasma glucose) 90-130 mg/dl
  • 1-2 hours after the beginning of eating (peak post-prandial plasma glucose) <180 mg/dl

They also recommend an A1c of <7%.  The American Assocation of Clinical Endocrinologists recommend an A1c of <6.5%.
